March and April updates

For about a week work has begun in the house where I will move in about a month (or maybe two); many of the things I do on my own, so between work and what I have to do in the new house, when I arrive in the evening I'm really destroyed.
So the time for MAME is very little; I will try to update as many resources as possible, but surely there will be shortcomings and delays.
I apologize and inform you that normality will be re-established by next June, thank you all for your patience!

Archeo-MAME, part III

More work on these dats and more ideas come to me... it's stronger than me!
Now I have the idea of 'mameID': it is a unique code to be assigned to all machines (including bios and devices) that have been added to MAME from version 0.1 to today.
This code (a simple number), of course, will never be changed over time. For example, at the machine 'crush', first in alphabetical order in the first MAME of Nicola Salmoria, I assigned the number 1. This will remain the same even in case of rename or cancellation of the machine. In this way we will have a table including everything that has been put in the emulator in these 20 years.
This involves the umpteenth restart of this revision of the dat (I hope the last one).

I also decided to change the format of the fields I added: instead of: <added_in>, <added_by> and the new <mameID>, I will now use 3 info / value (as in the xml of the software lists):

<info name="added_in" value="version"/>
<info name="added_by" value="author"/>
<info name="mameID" value="number"/>

Therefore, the work continues...

<info name="added_in" value="versione"/>
<info name="added_by" value="autore"/>
<info name="mameID" value="numero"/>

Il lavoro, dunque, prosegue ancora...

Archeo-MAME, part II

Since I resumed the work of older MAME dat, I also decided to check their actual functioning by loading them to ClrMAME.
I have thus discovered some errors present, related to the name of some rom of clone games; some of these I could correct them, others, since the errors was at the time present in the original drivers, I have also left them in my dat. Usually they are roms that have different names between parent and clone, errors then corrected by MAMEdev. These non-avoidable errors will still be reported in the readme_nn.txt file in my packages.
All these corrections will be made only up to version 0.84, fateful version in which the xml support was introduced, to which I will only have to add my fields "add_in" and "add_by", unfortunately always manually.
Now I have passed the complete revision of the names of the samples (at the time they were in .sam and not .wav format); my attention is particularly related to the use of capital letters. I know it may seem unimportant, but at the end of my review cycle the resulting dat files will be very precise.

At the time I publish this article, the situation is as follows (compared to online):

0.1 - 0.13: not modified.
0.14 - 0.34b3: correct but not yet online. In addition, the related diff files are also redone. During the sample check phase.
0.34b4 - 0.83: only the first versions I create of the datas are available on the web page, therefore with omissions and errors.
0.84 - 0.205: the dat are all derived from the original xml (so compliant), only my additional fields are missing.

So the work is still long!

Archeo-MAME

In these early days of the year I resumed working on the old (very old) dat of MAME. Every day I learn something new looking carefully at the drivers of the time and then correct, add information and modify the packages already available.
This work has come to version 0.34b3 and has as its primary purpose, to reconstruct as accurately as possible, the dats of the first MAME, those that still didn't have the xml support, which only came from version 0.84 of July 2, 2004.
Compared to dat I had already created years ago, based exclusively on the "dir2dat" function of ClrMAME (a program for which I will never stop thanking Roman for creating it), since last summer I added all the previously missing standard fields: "sourcefile", "sampleof", "cloneof", "romof", "description", "year" plus two new ones, in my opinion very useful: "add_in" and "add_by", to list in which version a game was added and by whom. In addition I have also added the system for the emulation quality (good, imperfect and preliminary) of the games.
In the packages, besides the xml, I also put the dat in the "listinfo" format, the first one supported. Especially about dats from 0.1 to 0.34b3 (without CRC support for roms verification), all the work was done manually, editing information game by game, info taken from drivers, readme and whatsnew and with some suggestions derived from mameinfo.dat from MASH, an inexhaustible source of information on MAME evolution.
Unfortunately every new idea, involves the remake of the packages already online, but the result are dats closer to reality.
Now, before continuing with the editing of version 0.34b4, I'm completely reviewing the management of the samples, starting from their introduction (MAME 0.14).
In those currently available on my dedicated webpage (this: http://www.progettosnaps.net/dats/MAME/) I had mistakenly added the field "sampleof =" also to the parent games, putting in difficulty ClrMAME. Since I will take these packages back into my hands, I will add the sample-specific datas thereafter (and later those of the BIOS-only ones).

That is all for the moment...

In questi primi giorni dell'anno ho ripreso a lavorare sui vecchi (vecchissimi) dat del MAME.
Ogni giorno imparo qualcosa di nuovo visionando attentamente i driver dell'epoca e quindi correggo, aggiungo informazioni e modifico i pacchetti già dusponibili.

MESS-Info fixing

In these days I started the correction of the descriptions of the machines but, above all, of the devices.
Over time I had left out this aspect of the file (my free time is less and less...) and now the wrong descriptions were really too much!
To do this I mainly used the MDE application of a motoschifo (Mame Dat Editor). Here is the procedure:

1. Import messinfo.dat in MDE.
2. Export the information in .cvs format (which I then convert to .xls).
3. Import the list into an Access database where, previously, I also imported the last MESS .xml (using xml2mdb).
4. I create queries to compare the correctness of the "description" field.
5. I correct, always using MDE, the wrong fields.
6. I try, comparing the MESS .xml, the version in which the descriptions have been changed and I report it in the file.

The work is a lot, but at the end (I'm missing about 280 devices) my file will be much more precise. Obviously from the next update I will not forget these changes.

5. Correggo, sempre usando MDE i campi sbagliati.
